Meet the CrossFit Coaches


The two signs that hang in our gym say "Act Justly, Love Mercy, and Walk Humbly" and "To Love Others More Than Ourselves." That’s the attitude you’ll experience from our great coaches here at North Rim CrossFit. These men and women are passionate about helping you overcome your obstacles, achieve your goals, and sweat out the stress of the day (and have a great time doing it).
  • Ryan Hignell

    Owner and Head Trainer

    Owner and Head Trainer Ryan Hignell had been working as a personal trainer in a “globo gym” in Chico for years before he discovered CrossFit in 2008. He realized that there wasn’t a CrossFit affiliate in his hometown of Chico, Calif. So he opened North Rim CrossFit and “never looked back,” he said.

    Ryan is an expert at “all things upper body” and says getting to know his members is the best part of coaching. “I am incredibly passionate about building relationships,” he says. “I think coaching and competing has given me one of the best opportunities to meet and build relationships with so many amazing people.” Ryan is a six-time individual Regionals competitor and placed 1st at the USAW Tommy Kono Weightlifting meet in the 85 kg weight class.

  • Shea Hignell

    Front Desk Attendant and Social Media Manager

    Front Desk Attendant and Social Media Manager Shea Hignell takes care of all the front of the house stuff for North Rim CrossFit, including being the very first person to greet athletes as they walk in the door. That’s a great role for her, because she’s passionate about welcoming people into the North Rim family. “We all know CrossFit is something special, and there’s nothing cooler than getting someone else to come to that realization as well,” she says.

    Shea has been an athlete all her life but says she never realized her true athletic potential until she found CrossFit. Since then, she’s competed in three Regional team competitions and placed 2nd in her weight class at the Tommy Kono Weightlifting meet in 2014.

  • Heidi Dausman


    Trainer Heidi Dausman is a working mom of “three crazy boys” who says “If I can find time to work out, anyone can. Please, no excuses.” Her journey into becoming a CrossFit coach was a natural progression for her, as she’s always been interested in health and fitness. “People always ask me what I do to stay fit,” she says. “Now I can show them by coaching.”

    She is a three-time CrossFit Regional team competitor who hopes to make it to the Games as a master athlete in a few years. Her favorite quote comes from Kung Fu Panda 3: “If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than you are.”

  • Sean Bradley


    Trainer Sean Bradley started lifting weights seriously in 2007 and realized he really loved not only the act of lifting, but also concentrating on the reason for the lift. As he was working on his degree from Chico State, he transitioned intro training and his career took off from there. Today, Sean specializes in Olympic weightlifting, CrossFit, programming for CrossFit, and weightlifting and strength.

    “I like the idea of taking on a challenge that seems too large and slowly chipping away at it until the initial goal seems within sight,” he says.

  • Dan Blair


    Trainer Dan Blair specializes in jerks, squats, split cleans, and inappropriate jokes. The father of three kids, Dan says seeing others move forward pushes him to be better in all aspects of his life, whether that’s teaching at Chico State, working in PR for PG&E, or coaching CrossFit at North Rim.

    Coaching has always been in Dan’s blood. He’s coached everything from kindergarteners to high schoolers and even the Special Olympics.

  • Clay Carlson


    Trainer Clay Carlson makes sure his classes are always fun, because who wants to learn when you can’t have a great time doing it? He tries to give his athletes the “best hour of their day,” because that’s what coaching is for him – the best part of his week. His favorite part of coaching is watching people do something they couldn’t do then they walked in.

  • Leigh Pearce


    Trainer Leigh Pearce has a passion for training women. “I love seeing them go from timid to strong and realize that strong is beautiful,” she says. She knows the beauty in strength first hand. Leigh spent 18 years in competitive swimming and has competed in several Regional competitions.

    Watching people grow is a driving force in her life. A speech therapist/teacher by profession, Leigh spends her days teaching kids how to better themselves. When she fell in love with CrossFit eight years ago, taking on a coaching role just felt natural. “I love it, and it gives me a certain energy that can’t be replicated,” she says.

  • Vince Nguyen-Bui

    Trainer and Nutrition Counselor

    Trainer and Nutrition Counselor Vince Nguyen-Bui is passionate about competition and specializes in middle-distance running, Olympic lifting and nutrition. Working with members and seeing their competitive spirit and progression is his favorite part of coaching. Vince’s business, VNB Nutrition & Fitness, offers North Rim CrossFit members customized nutrition services. His favorite quote is “Motivation gets you started, determination keeps you going.”

  • Rhiannon Carlson


    Trainer Rhiannon Carlson is an expert in “moving heavy things.” She loves seeing her members achieve their goals, and the friendships she has built through coaching her members are the most rewarding part of her job. Rhiannon is a former barrel racer, and her favorite quote is “”People may forget what you said, but they’ll never forget the way you made them feel.”
